A bit disappointing..., January 12, 2012 - By New Belgium- I am a HUGE fan of Merrell footwear, and have owned at least 10+ pair over the years. This model is by far the most disappointing pair I have owned! These are my everyday shoes, but I currently own, and use the following Merrell products....Chameleon Mid GTX, Whiteout 8, Outland Mid Leather Waterproof, Outland Low Waterproof....and have owned many others. I say this to showcase the fact that Merrells are my go to brand, EVERY TIME! I started wearing Merrells in 2007, and they literally cured my plantar fasciitis! The quality of the shoe is the standard Merrell watermark, great. I have worn these for about 6 months now, and they are holding up like Merrell's products normally do. The short coming of the shoe is the fore foot. It seems like they gave up at that point. The heel cup is fine, and the arch seems adequate, but down into the fore foot they are just flat, and provide very little support. I am an avid hiker, but would not want to walk more than 5 miles in these shoes, as I think I would be in "sore" shape....Since these are my daily shoes, I don't have too much trouble, but I am not on my feet all day, nor do I do a lot of walking. I wanted to submit this review, so people wouldn't purchase these thinking they are getting the standard GREAT Merrell foot bed, but something less. My friend bought a pair of the Mid top Leather version, and feels the same about them. These ARE NOT a long distance hiker, and folks need to know that! I will continue to buy Merrell products, and this is the very FIRST time I have been dissatisfied by anything they make. I will NOT, however, ever purchase the Refuge model again...

Fit is true in length and width. Good toe box room, I am just over an 11 on my left and a true 11 on my right with an E width not EE. The store actually caught the order on my request and swapped for a 11.5, glad they did.Sticks well to rocks with predictible smear feel, even wet though wet definitly changes rock to foot feel.Quality as with all Merrell.Color choice is nice with any brown or earth tone cloths, so they work with casual wear.I am happy with these.Will add a gel insolearch support, to add more shock absorbtion when I scramble, run. Even the best shoes only have a sock liner so inserts are my norm. Nothing against this shoe for only having a standard thin foam liner stock.Hope this helps.
